Pediatric Dentistry for Your Family

We offer a variety of pediatric dentistry services to keep your family healthy.  We recommend that you bring your children in for a visit as soon as they turn one. While this may seem young, it allows us to inspect and clean their baby teeth.  Remember that even though baby teeth will eventually fall out, children usually have them for at least the first seven years of life, making it important for them to stay healthy.  They will fall out one by one but should do so in the appropriate time, not because of tooth decay or cavities. In fact, even your baby is at risk for developing cavities.  As soon as your child gets their first tooth you need to brush it twice a day just like you would your own.  Once you have brushed their teeth for bed, you need to cut off the food and drink. By sending your baby or toddler to bed with a bottle, they will have sugar on their teeth at night, which can set them up for cavities.  Even breastfed babies have this risk if they are fed throughout the night.  Too many toddlers end up needing major dental procedures because of this common mistake. We understand that it can be very difficult to get your young children to allow you to thoroughly brush their teeth, and flossing can be out of the question.  No matter how hard you try, sometimes the two year old will win.  That’s why pediatric dentistry is so important.  We can give your child a thorough teeth cleaning and remove the bacteria that you have been unable to get to.  Bacteria can form in the smallest of places and along their gum line, which puts them at risk for cavities, tooth decay, and even gum disease.  Cleaning their teeth twice, a year can prevent these problems. Another way we help to strengthen your child’s teeth is by giving them a fluoride treatment.  Fluoride is a mineral that when placed on the surface of your teeth helps to keep cavities away.  Our teeth are made, in part of minerals.  Overtime these minerals wear away, and teeth become weak in the process. We will give your child a fluoride treatment until they are sixteen years of age, which has been proven to reduce cavities.  This is fast, non-invasive, and there is no pain, so children don’t even notice.  You can continue to strengthen teeth at home by brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. We believe that preventative care is important to staying healthy for the rest of your life.  Exposing your child to the dentist early will help them to continue the routine into adulthood.  The habits they learn now will help to shape the rest of their lives.  We recommend that you help them to brush their teeth twice a day using an electric toothbrush.  Even kids that don’t want to brush will typically use these, and they will clean better than the standard one.  Floss whenever you can and as they get older have them finish with an antiseptic mouthwash.  Visit us twice a year and help your child to live without tooth pain.
